A Home Office minister has dismissed the storm over the government’s ID card scheme, saying: “I don’t see what all the fuss is about.”
Phil Woolas was speaking during a live webchat with readers of our website.
The minister defended ID cards, which are being introduced in the north west before the rest of the country, saying the benefits were enormous.
He said online: “I have always been in favour and don’t see what all the fuss is about.
“The ID card, in my view, maintains your liberty by ensuring that your ID is secure and can be all in one place. The Oystercard in London and your Sainsbury card know much more about you.”
Hundreds of people asked questions about subjects which also included immigration cards and the compulsory full-body scanners at Manchester Airport.
The scanners – which take an apparently-naked picture of passengers – have proved hugely controversial since the government backed their use this week.
Mr Woolas, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, admitted the issue was difficult.
He added: “The officer is in a different room and can’t recognise you and the images are not kept. However, I admit it is a balance.”
He later visited Manchester town hall to discuss immigration with local community leaders.

'how many illegal immigrants do we have in this country'
It is estimated at 4m by the United Nations.
I think 4m illegals in a population of 60m.
Another question is:
''if I even mention the word immigration why am I racist'.

1. why are you and your party still pushing the id card scheme even though it has been proved that they will have no real use and will only be yet another cost? you'll still need a passport at £72 and drivers licence at £25.
2. why are the government not setting up extra forms of income tax on migrant workers to fund the extra burdens they have put on the existing facilities we all expect to use?
3. why did you start off your job as minister for borders and immigration saying you would come down hard on illegal immegrants and migrant workers and yet the only thing you have actually done is to try hard at stopping was the gurkhas settling who have actually more rights to stay in this country than any illegal immigrant or migrant worker.

There have been numerous examples of people arriving in the UK, being processed, refused entry and made sbject to removal. At this point the inevitable appeals begin:
1) "But it's not safe - my life would be at risk if I were returned".
2) "You can't send me back - it would be against my Human Rights".
Pre-check and avoid the arguments.

The questions are:
1. How many immigrants of African origin are at present in East Manchester?
2. How many immigrants of Eastern European origin are at present in East Manchester, this does not include members of the European Union?
3. Who chose East Manchester as a final destination for immigrants?
4. Does Manchester City Council receive monies for each individual immigrant who his located in East Manchester or any other district in the Manchester area from central government.
5. What impact is the greater number of people located in East Manchester having on the infrastructure of the area i.e. Jobs,Medical Facilities, Education and Transport.
6. With the total regeneration of the Toxteth Street area of Openshaw, will immigrants either of African or East European origin recieve preferential treatment regarding re-housing whilst residents who have lived in the Openshaw area in sub-standard accommodation for many years be forgotten.
7. The breakdown in the community spirit that existed in East Manchester before the influx of immigrants.
8. Why weren't the residents of East Manchester consulted prior to the influx of immigrants or does their opinion count for nothing.
I would like to assure you that I am not a racist but after listening to the debate I am now rather concerned with the points being discussed and would like some form of clarification on them.

retired ex pats have to report to immigration every 90 days.
get stoped and you have to produce your I D.
having no ID -no problem the Thai police will take you home to produce it.
so my Question is if thailand is approx the same size as England with a similar population how come an alleged 3rd world country can operate so smoothly and england can not??????
i'll tell ya Britain is a soft touch with a government that is spineless. worrying more about wrongdooers than the lawfull.
when you think that England is an island then you realise what a poor job the government are doing
the guys working on the frontline are doing a sterling job,,,, unfortunately the people behind then let the whole country down day after day.
stop an alien no proper paperwork take everything off them including the money in their pocket and
send them to a detention camp awaiting deportation.
if their paperwork is wrong my oppinion is they have no rights just like a low life house breaker who says bye bye when he enters your home uninvited.

At Tamesdie Central Library in Ashton under Lyne there are at least 200 books in Polish on the shelves in a special Polish section. I have seen no books assisting native Polish speakers to read English.
The majority are for adults although there is a sizable children's section.
Does the Minister believe that the policy of the Library and/or the Council is conducive to community integration or does he feel that such a policy can only assist in the ghettoisation of the Polish speaking community?

The Minister is no doubt aware that his Government has recently announced draconian cutbacks in Higher Education in the coming year with no doubt more to come. Does the Minister believe it is fair and equiable that the British taxpayer should pay for (say) an Italian to come take a University place at the expense of a native born Briton?
Does the Minister perhaps not feel that this is absolutely contrary to the aims of the Equalities Bill currently winding its way through Parliament and that the current situation totally and absolutely discriminates against English students?

I would also like to ask whether the Minister believes the UK should adopt the EU Blue card skilled worker scheme/directive? http://www.europeanunionbluecard.com

a whistleblower who worked for the UK Border Agency has today spoken out against the abhorrent culture among staff who are assessing asylum applications.
The whistleblower details:
-UKBA staff kept a toy gorilla, placed as a badge of shame on the desk of any officer who approved an asylum application
-The claims of boys from African countries who said they had been forcibly conscripted as child soldiers were tested by making them lie down on the floor and demonstrate how they shot at people in the bush
-The authenticity of an asylum seeker claiming to be from North Korea was determined by the UKBA asking whether they ate chop suey
-If an asylum case was difficult, the UKBA's advice was simply to refuse it and "let a tribunal sort it out"
- A manager at the UK Border Agency said "If it was up to me I'd take them all outside and shoot them."
-When asked about the case of a Congolese woman, a member of the UKBA legal department said "Umbongo, umbongo, they kill them in the Congo."

Do you accept that the UK Border Agency has a "culture of disbelief and discrimination" as stated by Keith Vaz?

How long does it take to enforce a signed deportation order?
And what are the condition that make deportation order not to be enforceable?

Now 55 students due to qualify in March face the dole instead - and others accepted on the programme fear missing out too.

If I am not mistaken, you are behaving illegally in leaving the country every 90 days to renew your visa and then returning. You dont mention this - the fact that you have to sneak across the border and into cambodia and then creep back in every three months, so that you can continue to enjoy the benefits of a country where you can live like a king compared to the way you would be living at home in the UK. Correct me if I am wrong?
So it isn't running smoothly at all is it, not when god knows how many foreigners like yourself are behaving illegally just stay stay in the country. Further to that, how dare you comment on immigrants, legal or otherwise, in your situation? You are the equicilant of an illegal immigrant in Britian, playing the system and taking advantage of a countries laws to suit your own needs. If I am wriong, and they have changed the law there in the last couple of years, feel free to let me know. Otherwise you have just shot yourself in the foot mate.

Full up? Are you mental? You must be talking about us being 'full up' with immigrants in general? Well, without immigrants the NHS for example would be in a right pickle, when you consider how many foreign nurses we have, helping to patch us up and make us well. You cant be talking about us being 'full up' with illegal immigrants, because the very nature of their illegal status means there is no way on gods green earth that we can know how many there are (or are not). What is your point? Do you even have one?

1. Why do NuLabour get it so wrong and against the wishes of the greater public?
2. Why do NuLabour discriminate against the indigenous population of the UK in favour of asylum seekers, illegal immigrants, and convicted criminals?
3. Why do NuLabour spend hundreds of billions of pounds this country simply can't afford on housing immigrants and asylum seekers while so many indigenous people are homeless?
4. Why do NuLabour MP's think it's ok to defraud the public by claiming expenses for porn movies and mortgages that don't exist?
...but I wouldn't expect him to be honest because he will procrastinate until he can think of an answer that includes; "..the last Tory government", ".......under Thatcher", etc etc.
